SLUGGERS

Happiness is like an unending boxing match with everybody weighing in on the subject, taking shots, then rolling with the punches while trying to get a knockout. The world is our ring, and society is the coach and referee, guiding, gauging, ruling and regulating the fight. The opening bell rang when you were conceived. The first punch was when your parents realized that you were making your debut into their lives, and guess what they thought: "Are we happy about this?" Next punch, you were born and they wondered: "Is the baby happy?" And of course your cute little smile and twinkling eyes landed a straight jab to their chins. End of round one.

Round two: You're all grown up now. One year old. It's your birthday, and mom and dad are busy organizing your first party, buying presents, inviting guests, and decorating the halls with your favorite animated character. You didn't see the hook coming. You're a bit dazed but soon things clear up and you throw a combo of smiles, giggles, and handclaps which puts them on the ropes. The referee ( guests and well-wishers) steps in for the 'eight count' (comments on the happy birthday girl/boy and the nice party) which helps your parents quickly recover to finish the round. Each of you retire to your 'perspective corner' feeling good about the 'happiness' bout.

Round three: You're really grown up now. Eighteen years old. It's graduation day. Mom and dad are ahead on the happiness scorecard due to all the support, money, and gifts you've received over the years. Your rehashed version of smiles, giggles, hugs, and handclaps have weakened to pitty-pat punches compared to what they've delivered, so today you give them a power upper cut. You think: "Are my parents happy?" The referee and coach are there in the form of family, friends, teachers, and community leaders. All give their reassurance that this occasion is happy, will spawn happy consequences, and leads to a happy life.

From this day forth, the subsequent rounds for happiness turn into a hit and miss crap shoot for the majority of people. The polished tried and true methods which previously allowed us to swiftly stick and move become hackneyed, predictable sludge, typically producing lusterless results. Some of us become sluggers, bruised and worn down after years of struggling to gain happiness by means and techniques taught by our societal coaches, stubbornly pursuing the happy goal. We pull punches and reserve our energy so that we may go the distance, often, arriving at the disillusionment of the happiness philosophy. The promoters for happiness include happiness projects, books, courses, movies, music, colors, affirmations, jewelry, crystals, drugs, happiness sampler kits (I guess you can sample happy), happiness candles, feng shui happiness pouches, happy meals, and, the now commonplace, happy face. How many ways can you package happy?

The entire happy 'program' can be overwhelming in life. You are expected to be happy, pursue happiness, and live happily. Unfortunately, most of us don't really know what it is. We talk about happiness and 'true happiness' as if they are two different things, as if one is false and the other real. Not so long ago, we would chitchat about strolling down 'happy lane', but developers have grown it into an entire district, so it's not so easy to cover anymore. What was once a simple portion of life is now a full blown doctrine with theories, formulas, and principles.

I was just about ready to throw in the towel on happiness when I found myself kissing the canvas, bare knuckled, and talking a walk on Queer Street after a 54 year battle. Seriously ill, out of work, financially strapped, and with one remaining invalid parent, I arrived at a point, stunned out of my mind. I realized that happiness would never be attained while I was in my mind. The mind is just like a babbling brook, constantly provoking thoughts, ideas, and conflicts, filling up the essential space needed to experience happiness. When I experienced a quiet mind and was devoid of all the expectations, conditions, presumptions, beliefs, values, and ethics placed upon me by the outside world, I felt a freedom I call happiness.

When we stop the fight, the search, the anticipation for happiness, it appears. As clear as a bell, the sound of silence will ring through you bringing peace to your whole being. You will feel relaxed, breathe easier, and a light mood will engulf you. A smile forms, you may chuckle, and the twinkle in your eyes return. As you continue this 'opening' of yourself, you will see that happiness is actually peace disguised, contained, and disallowed by an unyielding box. Step out of the box, step out of the ring. Embrace peace and get happiness.

Pressure Drop

How nice would it be to have a way to wash the pressure away? Can you imagine yourself free of the stress and strain that everyday living puts you under? What are some of the choices you can make to reduce the load you're carrying?
If you start today, you will see a significant change in the conditions that cause you much discomfort and fatigue. The first step is so simple, you may not believe it. I can guarantee you an improvement in 24 hours if you follow just step number one of the following suggestions. Are you ready? Okay, here it is. Drink more water. Pure, clean water. You should drink a minimum of half your body weight in ounces; so if we do the math for a person(let's call her Ginger) that weighs 140 pounds, how much water should she drink in a day? Answer: 70 ounces.
Much of our physical and mental problems can be traced to dehydration. We tend to think of dehydration as a severe condition marked by symptoms of excessive thirst, blistered lips, and cracking skin, however, it may also produce irritability, headache, restlessness, fatigue, and nerve pain. Because our bodies are approximately 80 percent water, it is essential that we consume adequate daily amounts to keep our systems properly flowing. High blood pressure can also be improved by increasing the quality and quantity of water intake. Water literally bathes our cells, tissues, and organs, washing away harmful toxins which may impede our bodily functions. It is also the major component of blood, keeping the blood fluid and in motion, preventing stagnation and 'traffic jams' along the circulatory 'highways'. Think about how you feel while traveling the highways on your way home from work, when suddenly, you run into a traffic jam: the pressure automatically goes up. Well, this is essentially what happen when the blood is full of toxins and circulation is low: the pressure increases. So, step number one is critical.
Next, we must make adjustments in the daily diet. Food is a great motivator, but we should move toward better food choices, not worse. If you know that the foods you eat are full of unhealthy fat, sugars, and chemicals, then don't choose them. Wheat germ oil, almond oil, flaxseed, and olive oil are good fats to include in your nutritional profile. Opt for more health producing foods like fresh green salads, fruits, nuts, legumes, and lightly cooked vegetables. Eat potassium rich foods like bananas, potatoes in their skins, raw beet juice, and dandelion greens. Cucumbers and celery are great to help reduce the blood pressure and are cooling to the body. Instead of coffee try raspberry, dandelion, or green tea. Blackstrap molasses may be a suitable substitute. Mix one teaspoon of Blackstrap in a cup of hot water and sip. Many health problems arise from regular coffee consumption. It prevents iron absorption, increases blood pressure, burdens the nervous system, and overworks the adrenal glands. Notice how heavy coffee drinkers have a typical drawn and sullen facial appearance.
Green smoothies and/or blended salads are praised for being a cornucopia of health building components. Integrate these nutrient dense liquid meals into your life for immediate and long- lasting positive changes in your health. Some benefits include weight reduction, improved digestion and bowel function, lower blood pressure, increased energy level, clearer skin, stronger bones, and better nerve function.

Try these power washing recipes as a natural way to reduce blood pressure:
Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/2 cup water
Mix well and take one time a day for three days; break two days and repeat if needed

2 bulbs of garlic, peeled
1 pint of Apple Cider Vinegar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Add apple cider vinegar and garlic into a large glass container with lid.
Allow to draw fro 7 days, shaking vigorously twice a day
On day 8, strain off vinegar, add cayenne and take 1 tablespoon in 8 oz water
each day. You may add a small amount of agave for slight sweetness

Make the right choices and wash your pressure away!

UP AND AWAY
copyright CBREEZE 2005

Out of my bedroom window into the snow, I stared, brooding over my near departure from my home of 7 years. Tears trickling from my eyes, I blew one last time upon the frozen glass to create a frosty haze upon the window. "Bye", I scribbled with my eleven year old finger, then turned and walked away.

The winter of 1968 proved to be my last spent in Dayton, Ohio. In a place where I had suffered the pains of an unseasonable maturity, I also left behind an undeveloped childhood. Cared for and groomed by elderly guardians, I was brought up in a strict and old fashioned household built on family principles and practices of the 1920's. Correct behavior and attitude was expected at all times and reverence was given to all elders. "Children should be seen and not heard", and "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise", were the motivations hurled towards me during the age of 'good home training'. With an 8 p.m. bedtime and a 6 a.m. morning rise, work and responsibility formed the bulk of my experience during my years there, so, little time was afforded for play and games. Every day, from age six, I had to set the table for every meal and wash, rinse, dry, and store the dinner dishes. Saturdays were special. After breakfast, I usually cleaned house until 12 noon, just in time to watch American Bandstand with Dick Clark. Then afterwards, if there were no more assignments, I was allowed to play outside for a couple of hours, weather permitting. Otherwise, I was engaged in some 'worthwhile' activity, like reading, sewing, or knitting. Many days, I retired to my room early, so that I could sit by my window and sing my made up songs. The window became my secret place for great imaginings out of which came adventure stories, drawings and poetry. I would stay there for hours at a time, daydreaming, creating, and singing about being free! The window was my best friend, allowing me clear sight of a big open sky where anything was possible, and at the same time, reflecting a transparent image of myself superimposed upon the world outside. This was the magic space where I could shed the expectations and responsibilities placed upon me by the 'grown ups' and be, unconditionally, me. My window, upon which I had marked my name, dreams, drawings, and songs, which had shown me my true self and opened me to the world of possibilities, was destined to be left behind. So when the day came for me to say farewell, I felt like I was leaving an unfinished part of myself there.

Looking back on myself, I can see that much of who I am now is who I always was. I'm still dreaming, writing poetry and stories, drawing and painting pictures, singing songs of love and freedom, and creating magic space wherever I go. When I grow up I want to be me.

Yes, this is the season to deck the halls, don our gay apparel, and be jolly with lots of folly. What do you want for Christmas? A new car, an iphone, or a laptop computer? While checking my family's favorites list, I felt like I was thumbing through a global electronics catalog, glimpsing the entries of Nintendo Wii, iPhone 3G, Canon PowerShot S90, iPod Touch 64GB, and of course, Apple MacBook Pro. My brother mentioned he wants a 55" LED LCD HDTV so he can have a righteous view of Sunday night football, and my 5 year old granddaughter wants an MP3 player. Strangely enough, one item that stuck out, like Daniel in the lion's den, was something named Pleo Dinosaur. It sounded innocent and familiar enough. I smiled and felt a bit of relief that someone wanted an 'ordinary' toy in this day and age. Feeling a bit nostalgic and tickled, with debit card in hand, I set out to google Pleo on the web. Wow! Was I surprised! Pleo showed up in over one million results. He's not your ordinary toy dinosaur either. Pleo is a robotic technologic masterpiece that boasts a price tag of well over $300 US that has been featured on a number of television shows including Good Morning America. So out went the Christmas list with this week's trash.

Gift giving has become the heart of our Christmas holiday, with love and faith retreating to the fringes. In the next few weeks, millions of people will scuffle through the cold, traffic, stress, and paltry budgets to join in the merry making traditions they've become accustomed to carrying this time of year. Some will cautiously pick and peck through the gift selection process, while others recklessly grab and go. Most will travel from place to place, digging and searching through mounds of decorative packing supplies for the perfect gift wrap to dress up their presents, even if wrapping presents is a futile deed. People get their gifts, tear off the paper, crush the box, and throw away the ribbons, quickly moving on to the next present. When it's all done and gone, the packaging won't be remembered. Frequently, the givers are not remembered in this gift giving exchange either. What happened to the spirit of Christmas, the attitude of gratitude?

If we ponder the deeper aspects of gifts, presents, and packages, we can see how it relates to us as individual human beings. The gift is the actual substance or 'soul' in this process and is chosen by a giver or benefactor. It is usually a special selection, matched or designed for a particular person. The package is the outer wrapping, chosen to contain, carry, and obscure the gift inside. In a similar manner, the human being is comprised of a substance or 'soul' which is contained inside of a specially designed package (the body). The soul is the gift or gifts the individual possesses is selected by a divine benefactor, and it is obscured by its external appearance. It exists and experiences life in the 'now' and is called a 'present' because it allows an individual to be present in his or her lifetime. Just like a gift package is damaged during the opening of the gift, we are also damaged by life's processes and experiences as we unfold to reveal our true inner selves. In the end, our package will be torn off, crushed, and trashed before our souls are totally set free. The soul is the part that lives on; it is the substance of your life that will be remembered. The package is only a dressing for the main course, a fringe benefit to seal the real deal.

When your life is done and gone, what do you want to be remembered for? Your substance or your package? Do you appreciate the gifts and talents you've been given in this lifetime? Are you remembering and honoring your divine benefactor?

As you move closer to your end, begin each moment with an attitude of gratitude. Give thanks for your being, the nowness, and your soul. Cherish the natural gifts you possess and appreciate the talents of others. Bring back love and faith to the heart of your existence, and allow the exchange of these spiritual gifts to be the main focus of your gifting choices. Push back the superficial and bring forward the hidden treasures of your soul. "You don't have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body."-C.S. Lewis

HAPPY EATING!

Tired of the traditional holiday meal? You're not alone. Just think of how many pounds of turkey, ham, potato salad, green beans, pumpkin pie, and dinner rolls you've put on over the years. Why do we prepare the same meals, year after year, when there are thousands of options to choose from.

For the past 200 years (give or take a few), not much has changed in the way of meal planning for the holidays in America. Turkey, ham, duck, goose, and stuffing have become monuments for Thanksgiving and Christmas. These memorials keep us anchored in the 'old world' ways and customs, keeping alive an era long gone. Holiday traditions and customs play an important role in the psyche of the human family, providing stability, values, fond memories, and a sense of belonging. However, flexibility and creativity infused into long-established practices can make gatherings fresh, exciting, and more memorable, preventing a cliched and overworked habit.

A perfect way to spruce up your holiday is with a non-traditional meal. Everyone is seeking healthier alternatives these days, and some are even opting out on many celebrations because of the rich fat laden foods presented this time of year. Surprise your family and guests with a vegetarian or vegan dish on your menu this holiday season. No one will feel guilty or stuffed after indulging in these delicious low-fat, high fiber, health producing refreshments! Bon Appetit!!

THE ARCHITECTS OF FEAR

The Monday before Thanksgiving day, I ventured into a dark reality. It began that morning, after consulting with my insurance company on the coverage limitations for leaky roof repair costs and peaked a couple of hours later when I received an overdraft notice from my bank. Unsettled and discouraged, I suddenly realized so much of our lives are defined by limits. In a moment of desperation, I thought about transferring money from a credit card to cover the insufficient funds in my account, only to remember that the credit limit had been reached. So when I called my bank to speak with the financial officer, and the receptionist immediately put me on hold, I couldn't wait because 436 of my 450 cell phone minute limit had been used already. My next move was to jump in the car and hurry to the bank before it closed, and of course guess what I ran into? A 35 mph speed limit. That is of course within my city limit. The bank is located on a street in the neighboring city which has a 40 mph speed limit. By the time I reached the bank and spoke to the financial officer, he informed me that there was a limit to how much money I could transfer from another bank into my account. He also reminded me that there is a withdrawal limit at the ATM window if I needed funds right away. Lastly, I was assured that if my account fell below the minimum balance required to keep it active, the bank would assess additional fees. Wow, thanks.
With thoughts careening from anguish to abandon, I slogged out of the bank, snatched open my car door, and, in final surrender, slumped into my seat. As I sat there, convincing myself that this situation was temporary and wondering how other limits play havoc with my life, I recalled an old television show called 'The Outer Limits'.

Broadcast during the 1960's, 'The Outer Limits' is essentially a science fiction anthology of horrific, thought provoking episodes full of action and suspense, most memorable for its opening narration. The television screen would suddenly blink and instead of seeing a normal broadcast scene, there appeared a black screen with an oscilloscope wave, as if the tv was malfunctioning. Then the eerie 'control voice' would say:

"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission.... You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to.... The Outer Limits."

The more I thought about this opening scene, the clearer it became how closely linked our life experience is to the outer limits.
Each day of our lives can be seen as an episode, full of action and suspense. One day you're going along just fine, then suddenly, in a blink, things aren't normal anymore. Darkness descends and you think 'what went wrong?', so you try to fix it, to bring back the 'normal' picture of your life, but you have little to no control because you didn't set the limits... the world did. You were taught that you could do whatever your heart desired and that there was no limit to what you could accomplish. You set out to participate in life's great adventure, to experience the awe and mystery within your mind, not the awfulness and misery imposed by outer limitations. For a while, your life may appear futile and contradictory, but like the show, it only lasts for a limited period of time. And, in the same way that the tv show ends with a twist or sudden chance occurrence, so will each of your life episodes conclude with a quirk of fate for your ultimate good.

Consider one of the life episodes of basketball legend Michael Jordan. After being cut from his high school basketball team, enduring serious humiliation and criticism, he didn't accept failure and used the incident to motivate him beyond those restrictions to heroic heights. He is one of many who has conquered the outer limits with strength of mind. During his speech at his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he said: "Limits like fears, are often just an illusion."
Clearly, the solution to overcoming the outer limits is to reach into the inner mind. Your mind can generate the power you need to move you past the boundaries established by the outside world. Your inner strength will take you 'one step beyond' the confines of real or imagined barriers into another realm. Trust your heart to give you the courage to continue through your fears and soon you will be on the other side of 'the outer limits'.

GIVING IT LIVE!

My favorite food for Thanksgiving and Christmas is the sweet potato! It is highly nutritious, great tasting, easy to prepare, and economical. A quick and easy way to add variety and nutrition to a meal is to shred it into salads or soups. It doesn't matter if it's a pie, souffle, casserole, baked, fried, stewed, or raw, sweet potatoes offer a heavenly taste every time. If you've never eaten raw sweet potatoes, you may be surprised that it tastes just about the same as when cooked. The real difference is in the texture, so to create a smooth, good tasting raw sweet potato recipe, you'll need a food processor or powerful blender like a VitaMix. Let's add a little buzz to this year's holiday meals with live, raw foods.

Sweet Potato Casserole

  • 4 cups peeled, chopped sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup dates, soaked 20 minutes
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup raw agave syrup

Place the sweet potatoes, water, dates, cinnamon, and vanilla in a food processor and puree. Pour into dish. In a seperate bowl, toss the remaining salt and honey. Scatter over the top of the dish. Makes 6 servings.

Yummy Yams

2 – 3 sweet potatoes

1 cup shredded coconut, dried
2 apples
1/4 cup ginger root
4 lemons juiced
2 oranges, juiced
1 cup walnuts, finely chopped (or ground in a coffee grinder)

Chop sweet potatoes, apples, and ginger and process in a food processor,
please divide the mixture into four parts and add juices, to avoid burning out the motor..

Place mixture in a large bowl. Add shredded dried coconut, lemon juice, orange juice, and chopped walnuts.

Mix all ingredients thoroughly

For a smoother consistency, in the food processor, process all ingredients throughly.

ENJOY THE RIDE!

This past Halloween, I visited Six Flags and waited in line for almost two hours to get a ride on the 'Goliath', one of the larger roller coasters in North America. Even in the drizzle and cold weather, I felt warm and prickly inside, excited by the anticipation of the enormous 200 foot climb to the top. Finally, I boarded a car, seated next to a stranger, who was equally charged for the ride. After strapping in, the car jerked into motion and we were on our way. We giggled, huffed, and puffed as we were lifted up the hill, struggling against the pull downward. Once we reached the apex, we threw up our hands, cheering and gloating in our few seconds of glory at the top. Then suddenly, we dropped. Reaching speeds of 70 mph, my face contorted against the wind, twisting, warping, and writhing with every bend, bump, and turn of Goliath. At times, I could hardly breathe, exhilarated by the pain and pleasure of the stress. Time and space were no longer relevant as all I could do was be completely in the now, holding onto life. Soon the car slowed, followed by a series of jolts, then we coasted smoothly back to the station. It took a few minutes to get my bearings, to settle the flutters in my stomach, and to steady my gait, but through it all, I was happy we made it back safely.
I'm inclined to look at life like a roller coaster ride. Your wait inside your mother for nine months is like the wait in line, then the gate opens(you're born) for you to take the ride.
You start life as an uphill struggle, slowly moving your way up, learning to crawl, talk, stand, walk, overcoming all obstacles and defying the pull to keep you down. You achieve, accomplish, and reach great heights, then bask for a few moments before then inevitable downturn. You go through twists and turns, some pleasurable, some painful, more highs and lows, coasting at times and bumping along at others. In the end, you come back to where you started, to the gate which lets you off the ride. So the destination is not important. You already know where you're going to end up in life, right back where you started, so enjoy the ride. Be thrilled about the ups and downs that life is giving you because its all a part of it!

Double You's

written by Kasmik Zenter 2009

My first visit to the principal's office was in junior high school for my involvement in a fight in the girl's bathroom. Private and communal, the bathroom was designated territory for seedy and secret activities like smoking, drug use, sex, and dropping bitches to the floor, so it appeared to be the perfect place to settle my dispute. Well, the fight ended up being well advertised and by word of mouth, the facts travelled all the way to the principle's office.
After a couple of good swinging rounds, crowds escalating and voices agitating, two or three security officers managed to break through and pull us apart, then we were swiftly escorted to our holding cell. Next up was the meeting with the principal which was much more frightening than the fight itself. I remember always feeling that something sinister lurked in the principal's office: a mysterious confection of unpleasantries awaiting those who fell in its trap. So naturally, I sat unnerved, heart pounding, anticipating the worse.
The principal entered and sat before me with paper and pen, then commenced with the interrogation. He said, "I've got six questions for you, and depending on how you answer will determine whether you are suspended or expelled. It's gonna be one of the two, so think carefully before you answer". Now I won't belabor you with the exact questions, but I will tell you that in documenting his report on the fight it centered around theses six words:
WHO
WHAT
WHEN
WHERE
WHY
HOW

After I answered, he looked over the information, wrote up a decision, then showed me to the door.

Now remember I told you at the beginning that this was my first visit to the principal's office. Furthermore, I had many more remarkable moments there, but all of my visits culminated in those six questions and a subsequent judgement from the principal. These events made me understand that what I thought and visualized about that office was not real, only my perceptions. There was no evil looming behind the doors, just people doing their jobs. And most important, I realized that what made the image and likeness of the 'Principal' was actually a set of 'principles' underlying everything that was decided in that office. Those six principles lay the foundation for all things in this world, from the most elementary of thoughts to the grandest mathematical computations and creations to ever be formed.
So when you get in a fluster, are met with insurmountable challenges, or get lost along the way, take a little time and ask yourself those six easy questions. Answer them honestly, review the evidence, then make a decision. The principles will show you the way.

Each month has its own special character and prominence marked by the seasons of a solar year and man-made reasons for celebration. Every single day of each month of the year is a holiday to someone in the world as a result of their birth. One of the favorite gifts to present someone on their birthday is their birthstone.
Essentially, birthstones are minerals, cut and polished into gems which can be set into metal and worn as jewelry. Stones are associated with great legends and powers, including tales of healing, good fortune, protection, and spiritual influence. One such story can be found in the Holy Bible which gives an account of Aaron, a high priest to the Hebrews. Interestingly, many gem scholars agree that the custom of valuing birthstones originated from the Breastplate of Aaron. Worn as a ceremonial garment, the breastplate was set with twelve different gemstones which represented the twelve tribes of Israel, and through it God revealed his divine will for his people.

Exodus 28:15-21
15 And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt thou make it.
16 Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.
17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.
18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
19 And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.
20 And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.
21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

Topaz is the birthstone for November. It is commonly seen in a golden brown tone but also comes in varieties of blue, pink and red. Best known for aiding mental clarity, Topaz can boost confidence, aid digestion, recharge energy levels, and stimulate optimism.

Cayenne pepper is one of my favorite herbs and is on my top 5 important herb list because it has so many uses and i love how it spices up the flavor of foods.

Cayenne is often referred to as chili, which is the Aztec name for cayenne pepper.

One of the greatest health benefits from regular cayenne use is for the heart. Scientific research indicates that cayenne can help to strengthen the heart, remove plaque build up in the arteries, remove toxins from the bloodstream, and stop a heart attack. Fennel is a well known plant used in many cultures as a remedy for indigestion, flatulence, constipation and other digestive problems. A popular culinary herb in India, fennel is used in foods, medicines, and perfumery. Ground and powdered fennel seeds can be used to flavor breads, cakes, and pies. It is also used for respiratory ailments, to help increase the flow of breast milk, to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation. This herb is warming and helps to break down accumulations in the body and stimulate circulation. Perhaps this is why many use it for weight loss!

Kasmik's Triple Crown Remedies

#1-Crush or grind 1-2 teaspoons of the seeds, then steep in 8 oz boiling water for ten minutes to produce a very effective remedy for indigestion. Add a small amount of vanilla flavored rice milk for a smoother taste or for children. The aroma is also soothing and relaxing to the nerves. Inhale deeply as you sip the tea.

#2 -Crush or grind 2 tablespoons of fennel and fenugreek seeds, the steep in 8-12 oz boiling water for ten minutes. Lightly sweeten with raw honey or agave and sip slowly. Optional-add fresh lemon juice for extra kick!

#3 -To create a poultice to reduce inflammation-Mix powdered seeds in boiling water to make a paste. Spread paste on one side of a white cotton cloth twice the size of the area to be treated. Hi everyone! Happy October!
October is known as the traditional start of autumn because of noticeable shift in the weather patterns and the color transformation in flora and foliage. The bright yellow, red and orange hues restyle the earth's summer greenery into warm cuddly wardrobe in preparation for the cool days ahead.
The harvest is being gathered and we celebrate the fruits of our labor during the warmer months by slowing our pace and partaking of home and hearth. Wonderful foods are in abundance-apples, squash, potatoes, grains-and we cook and eat heartily!
October is also World Vegetarian Awareness Month. If you are considering upgrading your diet and lifestyle, this is a fabulous time to do so! There are many resources available to help educate you about the benefits of a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and many events happening which will allow you to experience first hand vegetarian cuisine, philosophy, practitioners, and celebrations!

Vegetarianism is a wholistic practice which includes a healthy, well balanced meat/dairy free diet. The word vegetarian, coined by the founders of the British Vegetarian Society in 1847, comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning "whole, sound, fresh, or lively," as in homo vegetus - a mentally and physically vigorous person. The term 'Vegetarian' was coined in 1847. It was first formally used on September 30th of that year by Joseph Brotherton and others, at Northwood Villa in Kent, England. The occasion being the inaugural meeting of the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom.

The original meaning of the word implies a balanced philosophical and moral sense of life, based on a sustainable culture, implying a lot more than just a diet of vegetables and fruits.

Prior to 1847, non-meat eaters were generally known as 'Pythagoreans' or adherents of the 'Pythagorean System', after the ancient Greek 'vegetarian' Pythagoras.

The bottom line in vegetarianism is to have a well balanced sensible healthy diet.. From one person to another that may vary due to different natures, different work or even different climatic situations, or cultures, but a basic balance can be applied that can easily be applied to allow all those of us with a human body to live a healthy, happy, peaceful life in harmony with those around us.

PALM HEAVEN

The palm tree has many meanings in the ancient and modern world. In ancient Egypt, the palm stem was considered a symbol of long life, while the Assyrians regarded the crown of the tree as heaven and the base of the tree as earth, rendering the entire tree sacred. The early Christians and Romans used the palm branch as a symbol of triumph and victory in physical or spiritual war. In Judaism, the palm represents peace, plenty and the tree of life.
In modern times the palm as a symbol of the tropics, paradise, and the oasis, invokes feelings and visions of relaxation, serenity, and escape from the daily routine.
Even before the beginning of civilization, the palm has served as a source of food(dates, coconuts, palm oil), clothing and shelter for humans and animals making it a most important resource for our survival as well as providing an indispensable aesthetic value. Enjoy!

Riverwalk Sunday

San Antonio, Texas certainly boasts a strong and veritable military history reflected in the overall character of the city. Home to the Alamo, with almost every turn and crossing throughout San Antonio, one is brazenly reminded of the deep pride and cultural influence precipitated by the engagement of warfare. Nevertheless, balancing the stoic gravity of monuments, statues, and memorials is gracefully managed by the profuse lively arrangement of nature and revelers lined along the impressive Riverwalk meandering through the downtown area. Occurring one level down from the automobile street, the Riverwalk(aka Paseo del Rio) is essentially two parallel walkways peppered with bars, restaurants, and shops on either side of the San Antonio River. An exotic blend of sounds, sights, aromas, history and architecture, the Riverwalk is a distinct adventure in North American culture.
